5、好饿的毛毛虫
The very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle
In the light of the moon,a little egg lay on a 1eaf.
One Sunday morning, the warm sun came up and——POP!——Out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar.
He started to look for some food.
0n Monday, he ate through one apple. But he was still hungry.
On Tuesday,he ate through two pears. But he was still hungry.
0n Wednesday,he ate through three plums. But he was still hungry.
On Thursday,he ate through four strawberries. But he was still hungry.
On Friday,he ate through five oranges. But he was still hungry.
0n Saturday,he ate through one piece of choco1ate cake, one ice—cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one 1ollipop,one piece of cherry pie,one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon.
That night he had a stomachache.
The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf and after that he felt much better.
Now he wasn’t hungry anymore—and he wasn’t a little caterpillar any more.He was a big,fat caterpillar.
He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out and…
He was a beautiful butterfly!

Owl Babies
by Martin Waddell(文),Patrick Benson(图)
Once there were three baby owls:
Sarah and Percy and Bill.
They lived in a hole in the trunk of a tree with their owl mother.
The hole had twigs and leaves and owl feathers in it. It was their house.
One night they woke up and their Owl Mother was GONE.
"Where's Mommy?" asked Sarah.
"Oh my goodness!" said Percy.
"I want my mommy!" said Bill.
The baby owls thought (all owls think a lot)-
"I think she's gone hunting," said Sarah.
"To get us our food!" said Percy.
"I want my mommy!" said Bill.
But their Owl Mother didn't come.
The baby owls came out of their house, and they sat on the tree and waited.
A big branch for Sarah,
a small branch for Percy, and an old piece of ivy for Bill.
"she’ll be back," said Sarah.
"Back soon!" said Percy.
"I want my mommy!" said Bill.
It was dark in the woods and they had to be brave, for things moved all around them.
"She'll bring us mice and things that are nice," said Sarah.
"I suppose so!" said Percy.
"I want my mommy!" said Bill.
They sat and they thought(all owls think a lot)-
"I think we should all sit on my branch," said Sarah.
And they did, all three together.
"Suppose she got lost," said Sarah.
"Or a fox got her!" said Percy.
"I want my mommy!" said Bill.
And the baby owls closed their owl eyes and wished their Owl Mother would come.
AND SHE CAME.
Soft and silent, she swooped through the trees to Sarah and Percy and Bill.
"Mommy!" they cried, and they flapped and they danced, and they bounced up and down on their branch.
"WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS?" their Owl Mother asked. "You knew I'd come back."
The baby owls thought
(all owls think a lot )-
"I knew it ,"said Sarah.
"And I knew it!" said Percy.
"I love my mommy!" said Bill.

7、 和甘伯伯去游河
Mr. Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham
This is Mr. Gumpy.
Mr. Gumpy owned a boat and his house was by a river.
One day Mr. Gumpy went out in his boat.
“May we come with you?” said the children.
“Yes,” said Mr. Gumpy,
“if you don’t squabble.”
“Can I come along, Mr. Gumpy?” said the rabbit.
“Yes, but don’t hop about.”
“I’d like a ride,” said the cat.
“Very well,” said Mr. Gumpy.
“But you’re not to chase the rabbit.”
“Will you take me with you?” said the dog.
“ Yes,” said Mr. Gumpy.
“But don’t tease the cat.”
“May I come, please, Mr. Gumpy?” said the pig.
“Very well, but don’t muck about.”
“Have you a place for me?” said the sheep.
“Yes, but don’t keep bleating.”
“Can we come too?” said the chickens.
“Yes, but don’t flap,” said Mr. Gumpy.
“Can you make room for me?” said the calf.
“Yes, if you don’t trample about.”
“May I join you, Mr. Gumpy?” said the goat.
“Very well, but don’t kick.”
For a little while they all went along happily but then…
The goat kicked
The calf trampled
The chickens flapped
The sheep bleated
The pig mucked about
The dog teased the cat
The cat chase the rabbit
The rabbit hopped
The children squabbled
The boat tipped…
and into the water they fell.
Then Mr. Gumpy and the goat and the calf and the chickens and the sheep and the pig and the dog and the cat and the rabbit and the children all swam t the bank and climbed out to dry in the hot sun.
“We’ll walk home across the fields,” said Mr. Gumpy.
“It’s time for tea.”
“Goodbye,” said Mr. Gumpy.
“Come for a ride another day.”

Little Blue and Little Yellow
by Leo Lionni
This is little blue.
Here he is at home with papa and mama blue.
Little blue has many friends
but his best friend is little yellow
who lives across the street.
How they love to play at Hide-and-Seek
and Ring-a-Ring-O'Roses!
In school they sit still in neat rows.
After school they run and jump.
One day mama blue went shopping."You stay home"she said to little blue.
But little blue went out to look for little yellow.
Alas! The house across the street was empty.
He looked here
and there
and everywhere...untile suddenly,around a corner
there was little yellow!
Happily they hugged each other
and hugged each other
until they were green
Then they went to play in the park.
They ran through a tunnel.
They chased little orange.
They climbed a mountain.
When they were tired
they went home.
But papa and mam blue said:"You are not our little blue-you are green."
And papa and mama yellow said:"You are not our little yellow-you are green."
Little blue and little yellow were very sad. They cried big blue and yellow tears.
They cried and cried until they were all tears.
When they finally pulled themselves together they sail:"Will they believe us now?"
Mama blue and papa blue were very happy to see their little blue.
They hugged and kissed him
And they hugged little yellow too...but look...they became green!
Now they knew what had happened
and so they went across the street to bring the good news.
They all hugged each other with joy
and the children played until suppertime.
The End

11、一只奇特的蛋
An Extraordinary Egg 一只奇特的蛋
That one’s name was Jessica. Jessica was full of wonder. She would go on long walkes, way to the other side of Pebble Island, and return at the end of the day , shouting, look what I found! And even if it was nothing but an ordinary little pebbele, she would say, isn’t it extraordinary? But Marilyn and August were never impressed.
One day, in a mound of stones, she found one that stood out from all the others. It was perfect, white like the snow and round like the full moon on a midsummer night. Even though it was almost as big as she was, Jessica decided to bring it home.
I wonder what Marilyn and August will say when they see this! She thought as she rolled the beautiful stone to the small inlet where the three of them lived.
Look what I found! She shouted triumphantly. A huge pebble!
This time Marilyn and August were truly astonished. That is not a pebble, said Marilyn, who knew everything about everything. It’s an egg. A chicken egg. A chicken egg? How do you know it’s a chicken egg? Asked Jessica, who had never even heard of chickens, Marilyn smiled. There are some things you just know.
A few days later. The frogs heard a strange noise coming from the egg. They watched in amazement as the egg cracked and out crawled a long, scaly creature that walked on four legs. See exclaimed Marilyn. I was right! It’s a chicken! A chicken! They all shouted. The chicken took a deep breath, grunted , gave each of the astonished frogs a look, and said in a small , raspy voices, where is the water? Straight ahead! The frogs cried out excitedly.
The chicken threw herself into the water, and the frogs dove in after her. To their surprise, the chicken was a good swimmer. And fast too, and she showed them new ways to float and paddle. They had a wonderful time together and played from sunup to sundown. And so it went for many days.
Then, one day: when Jessica was somewhere else, august and Marilyn saw a commotion in the water below them. Someone was in trouble. Quickly, the chicken dove into the dark pool. August and Marilyn were frightened.
After a few long moments, the chicken reappeared, carrying Jessica. I’m all right. She called . I got tangled in the weeds, but the chicken saved me.
From that day on, Jessica and her rescuer were inseparable friends . Wherever Jessica went, the chicken went too. They traveled all over the island. They went to Jessica’s secret thinking place…
…and to the great pebble monument.
One day they went to a place where Jessica had never been before. A red and blue bird flew down from a tree. Oh , there you are! It exclaimed when it saw the chicken. You mother has been looking all over for you! Come ! I’ll take you to her.
They followed the bird for a very long time. They walked and they walked. They walked under the warm sun and the cool moon, and then…
… they came upon the most extraordinary creature they had ever seen.
It was asleep. But when it heard the little chicken shout “Mother!” it slowly opened one eyes, smiled and enormous smile, and in a voices as gentle as the whispering grass, said, come here, my sweet little alligator. And the little chicken climbed happily onto her mother’s nose. Now it’s time for me to go, said Jessica. I’ll miss you very much, little chicken. Come visit us soon- and bring your mother too.
Jessica wouldn’t wait to tell Marilyn and August what had happened . As she neared the inlet, she shouted. Guess what I found! And she told them all about it. And so you know what the mother chicken said to her baby? Jessica asked , she called her my sweet little alligator!
Alligator! Said Marilyn . What a silly thing to say! And the three frogs couldn’t stop laughing.

16、Inch by Inch 一寸虫
One day, a hungry robin saw an inchworm, green as an emerald, sitting on a twig. He was about to gobble him up.
"Don't eat me. I am an inchworm.I am useful. I measure things. "
"Is that so?" said the robin."Then measure my tail."
"That's easy." said the inchworm. "One, two, three, four, five inches."
"Just think. "said the robin. " My tail is five inches long."
And with the inchworm, he flew to where other birds needed to be measured.
The inchworm measured the neck of the flamingo.
He measured the toucan's beak,
the legs of the heron,
the tail of the pheasant,
and the whole hummingbird.
One morning the nightingale met the inchworm.
"Measure my song!" said the nightingale.
"But how can I do that? " Said the inchworm. "I measure things, not songs."
"Measure my song or I'll eat you for breakfast. " said the nightingale.
Then the inchworm had an idea.
"I'll try." he said. "Go along and sing."
The nightingale sang and the inchworm measured away.
He measured and measured
inch by inch
until he inched out of sight.

17、Elmer 艾玛
There was once a herd of elephants. Elephants young, elephants old, elephants tall or fat or thin. Elephants like this, that or other, all different but all happy and all the same colour. All that is
Except Elmer.
Elmer was different.
Elmer was patchwork.
Elmer was yellow
And orange
And red
And pink
And purple
And blue
And green
And black
And white.
Elmer was not elephant colour.
It was Elmer who kept the elephants happy. Sometimes he joked with the other elephants, sometimes they joked with him.But if there was even a little smile, it was usually Elmer who started it.
One night Elmer couldn’t sleep for thinking and the think that he was thinking was that he was tired of being different. “Whoever heard of a patchwork elephant?” he thought. “No wonder they laugh at me.” In the morning before the others were really awake, Elmer slipped quietly away, unnoticed.
As he walked throught the jungle Elmer met other animals.
They always said: “Good morning, Elmer.” Each time Elmer smiled and said: “Good morning.”
After a long walk Elmer found what he was looking for a large bush. A large bush covered with berries, a large bush covered with elephant-coloured berries. Elmer caught hold of the bush and shook it and shook it so that the berries fell on the ground.
Once the ground was covered in berries Elmer lay down and rolled over and over this way and that way and back again. Then he picked up bunches of berries and rubbed himself all over covering himself with berry juice until there wasn’t a sign of any yellow, or blue, or green, or black, or white. When he had finished Elmer looked like any other elephant.
After that Elmer set off back to the herd. On the way he passed the other animals again.
This time each one said to him: “Good morning, elephant.” And each time Elmer smiled and said: “Good morning ,”pleased that he wasn’t recognised.
When Elmer rejoined the other elephants they were all standing quietly. None
Of them noticed Elmer as he worked his way to the middle of the herd.
After a while Elmer felt that something was wrong. But what? He looked around :same old jungle, same old bright sky, same old rain clound that came over from time to time and lastly same old elephants. Elmer looked at them.
The elephants were standing absolutely still. Elmer had never seen them so serious, the more he wanted to laugh. Finally he could bear it no longer. He lifted his trunk and at the top of his voice shouted.
The elephants jumped and fell all ways in surprise. “Oh my gosh and golly!” they said. “It must be Elmer .” Then the other elephant laughed too as they had never laughed before.
As they laughed the rain cloud burst and when the rain fell on Elmer his patchwork started to show again. The elephants still laughed as Elmer was washed back to normal. “Oh Elmer,” gasped an old elephant. “You’ve played some good jokes but this has been the biggest laugh of all. It didn’t take you long to show your true colours.”
“We must celebrate this day every year,” said another. “This will be Elmer’s day. All elephants must decorate themselves and Elmer will decorate himself elephant colour.”
That is Exactly what the elephants do. On one day a year they decorate themselves and parade. On that day if you happen to see an elephant ordinary elephant colour you will know it must be Elmer.

18 、Dear little fish 亲爱的小鱼
Dear little fish, I love you so
I’ll feed you bread so you will grow.
Each day, I’ll give you one sweet kiss
And promise you I’ll never miss!
But on the day , my dear little fish,
You grow too big for your small dish.
I will take you to the sea,
And in one move, I’ll let you free.
How you’ll be so glad to go,
But dear little fish, I’ll miss you so.
I will wait all through the day
To see if you turn’ round this way.
And I will wait all trough the night,
To see if you come back in sight.
Oh! I will throw my only hat
To see if you will bring it back
And the first joy that I will see,
Is when you bring it home to me.
Your back will be my favourite boat,
And together we will sail and float.
Over the river and cross’ the sea,
To a small island with a palm tree.
There we will both live and play,
“Catch the hat” by night and day.
And I will know your love for me
For you came home when I set you free.

19、Swimmy 小黑鱼
A happy school of little fish lived in a corner of the sea somewhere. They were all red. Only one of them was as black as a mussel shell. He swam faster than his brothers and sisters. His name was Swimmy.
One bad day a tuna fish, swift, fierce and very hungry, came darting through the waves. In one gulp he swallowed all
the little red fish. Only Swimmy escaped.
He swam away in the deep wet world. He was scared, lonely and very sad.
But the sea was full of wonderful creatures, and as he swam from marvel to marvel Swimmy was happy again.
He saw a medusa made of rainbow jelly.
a lobster ,who walked about like a water-moving machine...
strange fish, pulled by an invisible thread...
a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar-candy rocks....
an eel whose tail was almost too far away to remember...
and sea anemones, who looked like pink palm trees swaying in the wind.
Then, hidden in the dark shade of rocks and weeds, he saw a school of little fish, just like his own.
"let's go and swim and play and SEE things !" he said happily.
"We can't," said the little red fish." the big fish will eat us all."
"But you can't just lie there," said Swimmy." We must THINK of something."
Swimmy thought and thought and thought.
Then suddenly he said," I have it!"
"We are going to swim all together like the biggest fish in the sea!"
He taught them to swim close together, each in his own place,
and when they had learned to swim like one giant fish ,he said, "I'll be the eye."
And so they swam in the cool morning water and in the midday sun and chased the big fish away.
